Securus Technologies is a company that has been leading the way in the government information management, tracking of parolees and inmate/detainee communications industries for some time now. I learned recently that Securus has been involved in a bit of an investigation about how some inmate communications providers have been accused of overcharging their customers.
I came about some interesting information about this whole scenario via a press release published by Securus Technologies. In this release, I found out about a company called Global Tel Link (GTL.) This company is a big player in the prison telecommunications industry, and it is believed to be a company that has engaged in overcharging and indulging in other dishonest business practices.
In the Securus press release I found out about some of the potential misdeeds of GTL. You see, the press release that I am referring to is just the first in a series that Securus plans on releasing over the next few months. Their goal is to bring these charges against GTL to light, and to bring about positive changes in the inmate communications industry.
In the first press release, I found out that GTL has been engaging in certain unscrupulous business practices to such an extent that they have cost the taxpayers of Louisiana about $1,243,000 to date.
It takes individuals and organizations that are willing to step up to the plate and to do the right thing in order to prevent corruption in varying industries. Hats off to Securus or putting in effort to do their part to clean up the inmate communications industry, and to hold providers in this industry accountable for their actions.
