End Citizen United: Fighting for Change

Before March 2015, no one had heard about End Citizen United. However, since it was established, the PAC has become Supreme Court’s Worst nightmare.
End Citizen United main goal was to file a petition that will oversee the reversal of the Supreme Court ruling. In 2010, the Supreme Court made a ruling that saw a shift in the American political landscape. For a long time, the billionaires in the United States were denied the opportunity to use soft money in the election. However, the ruling saw the overturning of the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002.
The act prohibited the individuals, corporations and non-profit organizations from contributing or spending money not subject to the Federal limit. By reversing the act, the Supreme Court allowed the corporations and billionaires to spend unlimited amounts of money in the political campaigns. The Supreme Court cited the freedom of speech clause in the Constitution that prohibits the government from restricting the individual expenditure.
According to the End Citizens United, the ruling will negatively impact the democratic rights of the American people to vote the people they want. The billionaires will have a chance of buying off elections. That is the reason why they are seeking to have a petition for the Congress to reverse the ruling.
The agenda
The primary agenda of the PAC is to raise $25 million towards the cause and collect the required number of signatures. By the end of August 2015, the group has raised $2 million and collected over 325,000 signatures.
The second agenda is to elect people who are in support of their vision. That is the reason why they endorsed 11 Democratic candidates during the 2016 elections. End Citizen United supports all candidates who are opposed to the Koch brothers and participation in the political landscape. The group will then raise the agenda of money in politics being a crisis.
The supporters
Even though it is not clear who owns the group, ECU has enthusiast supporters, especially from the grassroots. They stated that they are targeting the grassroots activists as they can impact many different people.
The criticism
The desire to see the Congress overturn the Supreme Court ruling may be a long shot. There has not been any constitutional change since 1992. It will, therefore, be hard for the Congress to change a law in the Constitution. According to the critics, the amount of money that they raise will be irrelevant in the matter.
End Citizen United can be commended for making the public aware of the Supreme Court ruling and its impact on the political front. The group also tries to keep the Supreme Court and the politicians from messing up again.
